DRA Charting Progress Timelines

Charting Progress Timelines

DRA – Rationale:
Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) enables classroom teachers to systematically observe, record, and evaluate changes in student reading performance.  It also provides teachers with information that helps them determine each student’s reading level and identify what the student needs to learn in order to be proficient readers.  The assessment is given on a semi-annual basis to monitor and document change over time in student’s reading.

DRA Reading Assessment Schedule:
Kindergarten
·       Assessment 1:  November 1st – December 15th
·       Assessment 2:  End of Year
Grades 1-5
·       Assessment 1:  September 15th – October 15th
·       Assessment 2:  April 1st – May 1st
NOTE:  Guided Reading groups may not be suspended during the assessment window.  Assess one or two students per day in exchange for one guided reading group.
Complete ALL components of DRA:
  • Reading Engagement
  • Oral Reading
  • Fluency
  • Comprehension (Informational and Fiction)
  • Teacher Analysis
NOTE:  Levels 16, 28 and 40 MUST test with informational text choice!  Maintain two assessments in writing folder.  After the 1st administration of the new school year, remove oldest assessment.

Running Records Rationale:
A running record is a tool for coding, scoring, and analyzing a student’s reading behaviors.  This information becomes a cumulative account of reading behaviors noted by the teacher over time, which helps support guided reading instruction.
Running Record Guidelines:
·       Kindergarten – Grade 2 – All students who are reading below Level 18:
– Complete a Running Record WEEKLY
·       Grades 3-5 – All students who are reading below grade level:
– Complete a Running Record WEEKLY
Retelling Assessment Guidelines:
·       For All Readers-Complete an oral or written retelling each nine weeks. Score using the appropriate rubric:  Oral Retelling Rubric (Levels 4-24) or Written Retelling Rubric.
NOTES:
  • Maintain running records and retelling summaries in Guided Reading notebooks.
  • Retelling Summaries:  If a student scores less than 11 on the written retelling rubric; address needs through guided reading instruction.
