1. When will the school want to begin utilizing the Common Core?
2. Each school will be expected to develop an implementation timeline.
3. Tested grades will be tested on the standards that are being tested next year.
4. We will be held accountable for those standards and students achievement.
5. We need to deconstruct the standards to ensure that our students are prepared for the manner in which they will be tested.
6. Deconstructing the CCSS is an essential skill that all curriculum leaders must know.
9. All students who will be testing will need to know how to type well before the test is launched.
10. Grades: 3-8 students will be typing in their written responses on the test. It will be a computerized test!
a. 3-5 will be required to proficiently write an opinion. Look for the pivotal points in the
CCSS they give us a heads up for when the test will be given?
11. The same will occur when 9-12 is added to the school.
12. Check out the online version of the text books—they discussed it at SCATA.
13. Only kids with an IEP who must take a written test will be able to do so.
a. There are 6 shifts from our current standards to the CCSS. 6 shifts in ELA.
b. Reading a lot more non-fiction than previously tested on the SC ELA.
c. State is recommending some texts for teachers: especially in the area of writing
“Writing matters in every classroom-for non ELA teachers!”
d. The reading lexiles are changing – they are now higher than before.

14. Teachers will need to be more of a facilitator than a teacher in the CCSS classroom.
15. More PBL teaching is appropriate for these standards than lecturing!
16. Staff Development:
a. The main focus of staff development this year should be on the implementation of the Common Core State Standards.
b. Teachers who have been teaching using the SS standards will have to change delivery and how content is taught.
c. There is a learning curve for educators who are already embedded in the SS Standards.
