Games to Increase Engagement
dsd-forbrightideas.pngOn August 28, two educators from NCTM explained how Tic-Tac-Toe and Deep Sea Duel, a math strategy game from Illuminations, can promote problem solving and deep thinking.

In the webinar Games That Encourage and Enhance Mathematical Thinking and Sense Making (recording), Sarah Deleeuw and Patrick Vennebush described how math strategy games can be used to incorporate the standards of mathematical practice.

Based on several articles from NCTM journals, the webinar suggested that even simple games can promote critical thinking and develop mathematical reasoning. A report of the webinar appears at eSchoolNews.

Interested in using games with your students? You can downloadDeep Sea Duel for iOS or Android, or play online today!

Other Math Apps from NCTM
Illuminations has released five mobile math apps in the past year, and they're all available for free! In addition, the NCTM Mobile app will keep you updated on all things related to the Council.

Check them out in the App Store or Google Play.

Deep Sea Duel — Play Offline, Too
cards.pngIf your students don't have access to mobile devices or the web, try a paper-based version of Deep Sea Duel.

For the basic, nine-card version of the game, simply use ace through nine from one suit of a deck of cards.

Using cards with numbers, words, and variables (PDF), students can play several variations… and you can facilitate their mathematical reasoning using the tips provided in the Deep Sea Duel lesson plan.

Brainteaser

Deep Sea Duel uses nine cards; this month's brainteaser uses nine digits. Can you use them to make a correct fraction equation?
